painting, printmaking, clothing, teaching

Stephanie Jucker was born in London England. When she was two, her family moved and they settled in Essex near Epping Forest. She returned to London for Art School and studied painting, mixed media, and printmaking. Next she went off to New York to do her MFA. Eventually she moved to California and settled in Marin in 1991.

She spent much of her childhood making little houses and clothes for her dolls and riding horses. Another favorite pastime was going on nature walks in the forest with her father. There they would look for mushrooms, try and identify the birds, and hope to see a deer which they never did because they had all been hunted to extinction. All these things still preoccupy her today.

Her recent series, Circus Girls, explores themes of performance, acrobatics and carnival. The references to precarious acts of "Daring Do" have an autobiographical and allegorical quality. As these costumed women balance, juggle, fly and contort, the paintings enter a realm of magical realism, where gravity is optional. Working primarily on canvas with oil paint, Jucker combines painting and printmaking techniques with mixed media such as glitter, silver leaf, and plants.
