This year marks an extraordinary milestone for Art Works Downtown as we celebrate one of our leading founders, Phyllis Thelen — visionary, artist, environmental leader, and longtime champion of the arts in Marin.
They say you only turn 100 once.
Phyllis imagined something bold and lasting: a vibrant arts center in the heart of downtown San Rafael where creativity could flourish, artists could find community, and everyone could experience the power of art. Thanks to her vision, determination, and generosity, that dream became Art Works Downtown in 1996.
Nearly thirty years later, Phyllis’s legacy continues to inspire artists, patrons, neighbors, civic leaders, and all who believe that creativity keeps a community strong.
This year, in honor of Phyllis’s 100th birthday, we invite you to give her a gift that reflects what she has given so generously to Marin: a lasting home for art, artists, and creative community. A donation in Phyllis’s honor is a meaningful way to celebrate her remarkable first century and help carry her vision forward.

One ticket to the ArtRageous Centennial Birthday Celebration on September 11, 2026, from 6:30—8:00pm, plus all of the above.
$1,000 | Leadership Circle Supporter
VIP pre-party access and a special champagne toast with Phyllis at 5:30pm before the event. You will also become, or remain, a member of AWD’s Leadership Circle for one year, plus all of the above.
$2,500 | Centennial Supporter
Your name included on a permanent ceramic wall sculpture as a “Centennial Supporter” on AWD’s supporters’ wall, plus all of the above.
$5,000+ | Centennial Champion
Dedicated recognition at the celebration, a photo with Phyllis, and special gratitude from the entire AWD community, plus all of the above.
