Who’s Afraid of Color? by Licita Fernández

Licita Fernández, Danza de Los Alebrijes, 22" x 28"

April 11–May 30, 2025

During my 73-year artistic journey, color is a fundamental force in my creative process. Color has served not just as a medium, but as a language through which I communicate emotions, ideas, and stories. Whimsy and playfulness are also key elements. My most recent work is influenced by Mexican folk art, specifically ‘Alebrijes’ (ah-lay-bree-hays), hand-carved and hand-painted wooden animals, people, objects, or fantastical creatures. I’m inspired by their bright colors and intricate patterns, evident in my most recent paintings.
