Civic Signs Lauren Bartone 2015
Civic Signs
Featuring new work
by Lauren Bartone,
Max Thelen Artist
in Residence at Art Works Downtown
June 12-July 3, 2015
Reception: June 12 • 5–8pm
Lauren Bartone's newest work considers how the habits, relationships and social attitudes of our neighborhood are revealed through the layers of text that cover our public space. Signage, advertising, instructions, and public dialogue communicate our needs and desires in many ways. They also however, reveal or obscure something about who we would like to be or, at least be seen as. Found materials and paper trash from my daily life are primed with house paint, providing the foundation for hand-painted typography and imagery, all sourced from downtown San Rafael. Civic Signs represents the culmination of an artist residency at Art Works Downtown, where Lauren has enjoyed working in an environment that balances independent studio work with creative community.
The Max Thelen Studio is a studio residency program generously funded by the Fenwick Foundation in commemoration of Max Thelen Jr. The residency aims to support emerging artists by providing free studio space, exhibition opportunities, and exposure to the public for one year.
