My latest paintings, the Freedom Series, represent a change of direction from my previous paintings, which were conceived as surreal and psychological. The Freedom Series is informed by iconographic symbolism; this change in direction occurred when I returned to my studio after major surgery. More than my other works, these paintings emerged from the deepest reaches of the subconscious.
I rely on intuition to create these symbolic paintings. Right now their meaning remains unclear to me, although I do feel they contain references to my Sicilian heritage. In the paintings, I see symbols from the Greek, Arab, Moorish, and Roman cultures that were among the many conquerors of Sicily.
